Toledo's perhaps best known festivity is the procession of Corpus Christi, declared of international interest to the tourist, and which has been held on the Sunday of the ninth week after Holy Week for the last eight centuries. Presided over by the archbishop primate himself, it is a spectacular procession when the splendid 16th century gold monstrance by Enrique de Arce is taken out of the cathedral, among other treasures, and is accompanied by the Royal Brotherhood of Noblemen of Illescas, in red habits; the Mozarabic Knights, in blue habits; the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, dressed in white, and the Knights of Corpus Christi, dressed in green. Houses are also adorned for the occasion with antique fabrics from the medieval weavers' guilds, and the ground is covered with flowers and fragrant herbs. The 'Tarasca' or dragon sculpture, which used to be present in the festivities of Corpus Christi, is also brought out. |
